I'm not sure why I didn't keep with with the install CD. I probably can scare up my old registration number for my copy. I never even considered going back to Quark, even though I enjoyed (!) using it back in the early days. Thanks for the thoughtful response cateye. Perhaps Afinity Draw would work for basic projects, much in the same way Illustrator can be used for single-page layout? I won't tell you to use Word, of course, because that'd just be mean.įinally, Serif, the company behind the Afinity series, is working on a page layout program to compliment their photo and vector offerings, but I don't think it's even in beta yet. Although that feels like overkill for the sort of design you're talking about. continues to churn out new versions and price them aggressively due to their distant underdog status. Since you have experience with Quark, it might make sense to go back to it-it still offers a perpetual license (versus Adobe's subscription model) and Quark Inc. I'm not so certain that's still the case, although perhaps someone else could comment since I haven't used the new version that much. There just haven't been that many options on the Mac side.Īpple's Pages-at least before the recent reboot-had enough basic layout and columnar tools that it could be used to design some relatively complex and interesting things. I've been neck deep it the design world since my 20s and while there've been a host of consumer-level photo and vector programs, some better and easier to use than others, page layout remains one of those holy grails for the non-professional. That comes with its own set of tradeoffs and risks (particularly security, if the system is exposed to the internet), but at least then you know everything will keep working predictably. Of course, the other option is to do what you're considering: Avoid all upgrades and tailor the OS and all other components to the software you want to maintain.

Why give yourself the stress of wondering which OS or component update is finally going to cause software to stop functioning? A nice bonus is most of them are really cheap: Aren't the Afinity apps like $50 a piece? A bargain.Īlso remember that "it works" and "it doesn't work" may not necessarily be a binary thing: Files can be silently corrupted or refuse to save as a result of OS changes when using software last updated five years ago, particularly programs as massive and finicky as Photoshop, Illustrator, et al.

If you don't rely specifically on the Creative Suite for your daily bread and butter, you would be much better served moving to one of the very capable prosumer alternatives (the top-notch Afinity series immediately comes to mind, or Pixelmator if your needs are more basic). Speaking as a heavy Adobe user, CC is well worth the transition costs. There's no reasonable case to be made against it if you are a professional.

If you depend on the Creative Suite as a professional, you upgrade. I'm going to counter here and argue that no one "depends" on CS5, or any software that's EOL.

My aim is to warn users that, if they depend on Adobe CS5 apps, to not upgrade past Yosemite. The idea of renting software has no appeal, especialy since I am in wilderness out of Internet range for weeks at a time. Several other of my apps have started crashing frequently, so I will revert to OS X Yosemite soon, and will stay there. I've had an update to El Capitan, but the problems persist. Moral of the story: If you use CS5 then don't upgrade past Yosemite. No longer page 1 or lump it.Īlso, every time I quit InDesign CS5, the app crashes.

When placing a multi-page pdf I used to have the abilty to choose which page I wanted placed. doc file, there is no ability to handle styles, line breaks etc. When I place items into an InDesign page, the options that used to be at the bottom of the place dialogue box have disappeared. However, Adobe InDesign CS5 (Version 7.0.4) has developed some strange behaviours. I've successfully installed Java SE 6 runtime under El Capitan (Version 10.11 Beta (15A225f)).
